Engineering students Thursday put their cars to the test to see whose would go the farthest.

“The students did very well with the cars,” said Lee Price, program teacher at Goliad High School. “It is fun to see what kind of designs they came up with from their instructions and creativity.”

They were told to build cars from cardboard, paper clips, pencils and other materials that are powered by rubber bands.

“The longest distance that a car traveled was 82 inches or 6-feet 10-inches,” he said. “The requirements were for it to be able to move at least 24 inches or 2 feet.

“I had quite a few teams go at least 4 feet, which was awesome to see.”

Price was noticeably excited to watch the students test their designs inside the high school gym that afternoon.

“They did a really good job of coming up with different ideas on how they wanted it to look and move,” he said. “We had a few groups that decided they wanted a car with no front wheels and they made it work which was cool to see.

“I think overall the students had a good learning experience building the car and figuring out how to make them powered by rubber bands.”
