1 : 1 Laptop Project
The Goliad ISD Board of Trustees has approved a 4 year lease/purchase of 862 Apple laptops with carrying cases or back packs in order to provide K-12 staff members and students grades 7-12 with a macbook or macbook pro for educational use. No one else in the region has even attempted a project like this.
This project puts Goliad in the forefront of modern research-based innovations to increase learning and will provide staff and students unprecedented opportunities to extend their learning in more ways than every before. These laptops may be taken home and used to complete and review assignments as well as explore other areas of interest. Some but not all textbooks are now available in digital format. As this practice increases, the students will no longer have to carry bags of heavy books around all day, which will benefit their health.
A wireless network is currently being installed to extend network acess into all areas of the school sites, including the High School (north and south) and Middle School parking lots.
Because the laptops are of higher value than textbooks and will be carried back and forth, unlike most school equipment, staff and students along with parents will be asked to sign a special extended computer agreement as well as the normal one for general school computer use at school. It is understood that some accidental damage may occur but it is expected that reasonable care will be used to minimize damage or loss.
The Children's Internet Protection Act requires that schools have a content filter in place and make every effort to block objectionable sites. However, there is no guarantee that all such sites have been identified. Students should not seek out inappropriate sites and are expected to report such sites if encountered accidentally. On the flip side, occasionally sites are mislabelled. It is possible to request that such sites be reclassified.
Students will not be filtered by the school when they are using internet at home. If parents so request, a filtering program may be installed on the student laptops. Student will not be able to install any programs on the laptops. All installations must be done by technical staff in order to preserve the integrity of the machine. Proof of license must be presented due to legal requirements.
The District is unable to provide free internet use at home. It is hoped that businesses will begin to offer special educational prices or even subsidize home accounts. Currently, city citizens can receive inexpensive service from AT&T. Outside the city, there are a number of wireless and satellite vendors available.
Students are permitted to request a school sponsored, filtered email account which can also be used at home or wherever internet is available.
